My name is Miguel Torres, I'm a community activist with Sunrise Movement, a senior at the University of Rhode Island, a resident of Westerly, and I am running to be your State Representative for Westerly and Hopkinton in House District 38. I am a young democrat, running on a platform that puts working families of Rhode Island before special interests and the ultra-wealthy. Some of the issues that I'm most passionate about are renewable energy & green job creation, affordable housing, quality public education, and a $15 minimum wage. As a young person, I know that the climate crisis threatens our homes, our lives, and our economy. As a student, I understand the barriers created by high tuitions and student debt. As the son of an immigrant, I firmly believe that no family should be separated from each other.

The future of my generation and generations to come are on the line and I know that I have no choice but to stand up for it. In the General Assembly, I will represent the people in my community and pass legislation that supports our wellbeing, not corporations, wealthy donors, and special interest.

  • Miguel is a young democrat, whose platform puts working families of Rhode Island before special interests and the ultra-wealthy. Some of the issues that he's most passionate about are renewable energy, affordable housing, quality public education, and a $15 minimum wage.
  • Miguel knows that solar energy and other renewable energy sources are important for our future, but so are forests and our open space. We believe that the General Assembly needs to amend the renewable energy laws so that solar is sited on already developed and disturbed areas like rooftops, parking lots, and landfills.
  • Miguel is calling on the General Assembly to adopt the Rhode Island Political Coop's "Coronavirus Rescue and Recovery" Plan. This plan would dramatically expand unemployment insurance, free testing, treatment, hospital beds and ventilators. It also calls for a moratorium on evictions, foreclosures, and utility shut-offs throughout the duration of the crisis, as well as immediate legislation that would guarantee free food for everyone who cannot afford it, and free deliveries of food for anyone who cannot leave their home during the crisis.
Some of the issues that I'm most passionate about are renewable energy, affordable housing, quality public education, and a $15 minimum wage.
The climate crisis is going to be the greatest challenge for Rhode Island in the next decade. It will threaten our homes, our lives, and our economy. I will fight for a just transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030 that prioritizes working people and frontline communities. I am also refusing contributions from the fossil fuel industry to show my commitment to fighting for a livable future.
Yes, this is why I'm running alongside 24 other candidates within the Rhode Island Political Coop. We are all fighting for a livable and equitable future, and share several platform policies. I'm excited to work together when we're elected, and have already enjoyed working with them now. An example will be plans to work together with Megan Cotter who is running in House District 39, in order to ensure that renewable energy is responsibly placed throughout Hopkinton, and not resulting in the clear cutting of our beautiful forests.
I am interested in serving on several committees, especial the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources and the House Committee on Health, Education, and Welfare.
