Previously, Dennehy worked on New Hampshire gubernatorial campaigns for Stephen Merrill (R) and Craig Benson (R) in addition to two New Hampshire primary victories for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2000 and 2008. Dennehy co-founded and is a partner at Dennehy & Bouley, a New Hampshire-based public affairs firm.[1]

From March to September 2015, Dennehy was a senior advisor for Rick Perry's 2016 presidential campaign.[2][3]

Career

Early in his career, Mike Dennehy worked in non-campaign advisory roles in New Hampshire. He was a special assistant to former Gov. Stephen Merrill (R), "managing political and legislative crises for Merrill," according to Dennehy's profile at his firm.[1] Dennehy is best known as the strategist who helped Sen. John McCain (R) win the New Hampshire primaries in both 2000 and 2008. The Concord Monitor credited Dennehy with building "McCain's statewide grass-roots network" in 2000.[4] The paper also quoted McCain when he hired Dennehy as national political director for 2008: "After the 2000 campaign, we kept in close contact, and he's become one of my closest advisers and friends. He's very good at politics, and he obviously - I think - can do the same job on a national scale that he's done for me in New Hampshire."[4]

In addition to his political campaign activities, Dennehy is a co-founder of NH Journal, a New Hampshire political news site. He founded the site in 2010 with Patrick Hynes, James McKay, Shawn Millerick and Paul Young.[5] Young was the New Hampshire advisor for Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.) 2016 presidential campaign.[6]

In April 2014, Mike Dennehy was one of the organizers who brought "around a dozen activists" from New Hampshire to Texas to meet with Rick Perry, according to The Huffington Post.[7] At that time, it was also reported that Dennehy had joined Americans for Economic Freedom, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization created with the remaining funds from Make Us Great Again, a super PAC that had supported Perry's 2012 presidential run.[8][9]

On March 11, 2015, the New Hampshire Journal reported that RickPAC, Perry's leadership PAC, had hired Dennehy as a state senior advisor.[10]

Perry announced his presidential run on June 4, 2015.[11] On June 7, 2015, the Perry campaign announced Dennehy as a senior advisor in New Hampshire.[12]

On September 2, 2015, Dennehy told John DiStaso of WMUR.com that "while he still considers himself a strong supporter of the Republican presidential candidate, he no longer considers himself an advisor to the campaign." Dennehy said he had not been paid since June and advised the campaign to "go and camp out in Iowa."[3] Perry suspended his presidential campaign on September 11, 2015.[13]
