Derrick was added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Emerging Races program on April 8, 2016. Emerging Races is the second tier of the Red to Blue program. According to the DCCC, it includes the districts "where campaigns are on track and working hard to put seats in play."[4][5]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Derrick's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Bringing Jobs Back To The North Country: Mike recognizes that the future of the North Country is directly dependent on our ability to keep jobs, create new jobs and improve wages in our region. We are fortunate to live in an area with a skilled work force, abundant natural resources, a high quality of life, and a low cost of living. However, it is also full of small businesses that struggle to make ends meet.
  • Securing Our Safety At Home And Abroad: The most important job of Congress is to keep Americans safe, which is what Mike’s done his entire career as a senior Army officer. He has lived through these issues, on battlegrounds and borders around the world, and understands them at every level. As a diplomat who represented the US State Department on missile defense, he has first-hand experience in working with other countries to defend our nation and avoid unnecessary military intervention.
  • Protecting Our Extraordinary Environment: The Adirondacks include New York’s most important environmental resources for water, land, and forests. People in the North Country know that our wild open spaces, abundant forests, and crisp air are more than a natural blessing -– they're at the heart of our way of life. Mike is committed to protecting and conserving our region for future generations.
  • Fulfilling Our Duty To Veteran Care: Mike and his wife Kathy live as proud U.S. Army veterans under the care of the Department of Veterans Affairs. They are two of over 66,000 veterans in this congressional district, more than any other district in New York. Despite this large constituency, the closest VA medical centers are in Albany and Syracuse. Our veterans deserve nothing less than the absolute best care and benefits in the world.
  • Reforming Campaign Finance Laws: Mike believes that a handful of wealthy individuals and corporations should not be able to influence and purchase the outcome of elections through unaccountable and unlimited amounts of money. NY-21 is facing this issue this year, as Mike’s opponent will have millions of dollars pour in from outside the district.
