Three of the five seats on the Nampa School District board of trustees were up for by-district general election on May 16, 2017. Zone 3 incumbent Bob Otten and Zone 4 incumbent Brian McGourty did not file to run for re-election, which left two seats open for newcomers. Allison Westfall was the only candidate to file to run for the Zone 3 seat. She won the election unopposed. Three candidates—Wendall Cass, Clinton Child, and Kim Rost—ran for the Zone 4 seat, and Rost won. Idaho Statesman survey

Fuller participated in the following survey conducted by the Idaho Statesman. The questions provided by the Idaho Statesman appear bolded, and Fuller's responses follow below.

What is the modern role of a school board? What should voters know about it that they perhaps don't?

The modern role of a school board is to provide informed oversight. Instead of micromanaging or rubber-stamping the board ensures that the district is making progress in the goals that the board has established. To do this the board listens to the community, sets clear goals for the district and hires a superintendent with the specific task of meeting those goals and managing the budget properly. A board trusts but verifies what is reported to them.[5]
—Mike Fuller (2017)[6]

Why should voters consider you for this office?

If elected I will have the most experience on the board. A fellow board member recently wrote the following about me, 'Mike is an important reason why this district is where it is today. He has pushed us very gently guiding us in a balanced policy governance which will benefit the board in helping to govern the district. He has helped us in righting our financial ship so that we are now in a great financial position. He will continue to maintain his interest in keeping us solvent and to to maintain a 5% budget surplus. I could go on and on but I think he has been a very involved board member in promoting what is best for the students of Nampa.'[5]
—Mike Fuller (2017)[6]

What are your priorities if elected?

If reelected my priorities would be to (1) continue to help ensure the financial stability of the district, (2) engage the community more as the board continues to evaluate the needs and desires of the community and (3) work hard to help ensure that the students of the Nampa School District develop the character and life-long learning skills needed for them to be prepared for life after high-school.[5]
—Mike Fuller (2017)[6]

You will be working with a new superintendent. What would be your expectations for that person?

Of course. School board members must work closely with the superintendent to ensure that the district is making process on the goals that the board has set. I would expect that person to work to scrupulously maintain the finances of the district and be creative in working closely with the board, parents and the community to fulfill the board's Purpose, Mission and Vision statements.[5]

Why should voters vote for you:

A fellow board member said the following about me:

As a board, we have accomplished many things and Mike is an important reason why this district is where it is today. He has pushed us very gently guiding us in a balanced policy governance which will benefit the board in helping to govern the district. He has helped us in righting our financial ship so that we are now in a great financial position. He will continue to maintain his interest in keeping us solvent and to to maintain a 5% budget surplus. I could go on and on but I think he has been a very involved board member in promoting what is best for the students of Nampa.
