Campaign themes

2016

Hassid highlighted the following statement on his campaign website:

My name is Mike Hassid and I am running for the District 5 seat on the Oakland Unified School District Board of Education. I’m a Bay Area native and currently live in Jingletown (in the Fruitvale District) with my wife and two young children. My wife and I could not be more proud that our son attends one of our local public schools, the Community School for Creative Education (CSCE). We look forward to his younger sister attending CSCE after she graduates from preschool. I currently serve on CSCE’s board and my wife regularly volunteers at the school.

Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to improving public education and expanding educational opportunities for children who need it the most. Public education is profoundly important to our community: strong public schools have a direct and long-lasting impact on improving the lives of children in traditionally underserved communities.

I am committed to serving those who serve others. I have spent over 14 years advising a wide variety of nonprofit organizations on how to use their resources efficiently and effectively, with a focus on organizations that work to improve public education. My experience includes:

  • Chief Financial Officer at StudentsFirst, a national advocacy organization working to ensure that all kids, especially those from underserved communities, get access to a quality public education and, thus, a shot at the American dream.
  • Chief Financial Officer of EnCorps STEM Teachers Program, a nonprofit that recruits professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and helps them become teachers in high-need California public schools.
  • Controller at NewSchools Ventures Fund, a nonprofit venture philanthropy firm that funds and supports education entrepreneurs,
  • Controller at Common Sense Media, a national nonprofit focused on media literacy.
  • Founding OrgAmi, a nonprofit that provides management consulting and back-office support to nonprofit organizations throughout California.

I also have deep expertise in finance, operations and information systems. Currently, I serve as Vice President of Finance and Operations at Exponent Partner Partners, a B-Corp and California Benefit Corporation providing strategic technology consulting to nonprofit organizations.

I hold an MBA from the Masagung Graduate School of Management at the University of San Francisco and a BA in Philosophy from University of California Berkeley.

Please take a few minutes to peruse my website and read more about my goals if I were elected to the Board of Education. I would be grateful and honored to be given the opportunity to serve my community, the parents and students in Oakland’s Public Schools. I humbly ask for your vote on November 8th.[8]
