I am a Wichitan and lifelong Kansan who believes in the power of people who, if given the right tools and protections, can make their communities a safe, caring environment for their families. I've volunteered for various causes in the community, coached baseball, football, and wrestling, and am married to my high school sweetheart. I am a small businessman, and want to ensure that hard work does indeed equal success.
  • I am a man of the people. My experiences mirrors the experiences of many people in my district who want a safe community to raise their children in.
  • I believe in creating the right environment for upward mobility. People are willing to work to advance their lives and create a better life for the next generation. Growing up in poverty, I know firsthand the barriers that those born in the valleys have in trying to climb up to the peaks.
  • The power absolutely resides in the people. No program can solve the issues we face without community buy-in or community engagement.
We need to create a community which cares about people. Right now we have problems with access to quality mental health, chemical dependency treatment, sex trafficking, and homelessness. We need to keep our eyes, hearts, and minds open to new ideas in how to address these issues.

When state hospitals began closing a few decades ago, the thought was that local governments would be best suited to come up with innovative ideas to handle those who suffer from mental health issues/addictions. Sadly, local governments failed to effectively pick up the slack, and we've seen the results in our communities. Until we can come up with a comprehensive plan to address these issues, our families and friends will continue to suffer. The trickle down effects can be seen in the homeless communities, crime, and domestic violence. If we truly want to create a safer, fairer, and more compassionate society, it has to start in addressing mental health and addiction.

Sex trafficking is another issue that hangs heavy on my head at night. Most people who are involved in the sex trade are runaways who are already running from some type of abuse, whether it be mental, physical, emotional, or sexual. They are already vulnerable and preyed upon by those who profit from their unfortunate situation. We need to pursue legislation that protects those who go unseen and uncared for, and create a more just society.
An open mind and willingness to talk and listen to all people. Democracy, at its core, is about an exchange of ideas, and hopefully those making decisions, whether it is the people voting elected officials in or those same elected officials making decisions, choose the strongest and wisest of these ideas. Until we start putting people in place who listen to the people, we will not have a government by/for/and of the people.

A desire to help the people. I hear and see so many heartbreaking stories and experiences of those in my community who have to deal with issues beyond their control, whether it be people with family members with mental health/addiction issues, people born into poverty who live in tough neighborhoods and adverse circumstances, or those who are being exploited and abused. America is still a place of peaks and valleys. We need to make sure that those born in the valleys have the tools and support systems to help them climb to a quality life.

Toughness. Growing up in poverty in a rough neighborhood, I learned firsthand that there are plenty of people worse off than myself. It's easier to handle the pressures and pitfalls of public service if you keep in mind those people, and carry their stories with you along the way.
Accountability to the people. If you want to do this job right, you need to listen to the people and follow their will. We are supposed to be a mouthpiece of the people, not someone who dictates down to them. The most important advisors we have are our neighbors. Until we start listening to them more than we listen to lobbyists, our government will continue to suffer from apathy and bad policies.
My first consistent job (not including delivering papers, washing cars, or mowing lawns) was as a worker at Lawrence Dumont stadium, home of the Wichita Wranglers. I worked two summers there, and even got to bring George Brett a beer on one occasion. I love baseball, and it was a pleasure to work around it in some capacity. Still my favorite job I ever had!
For Whom The Bell Tolls. I love the Hemmingway characters, especially those who are broken down and past their prime fighting for causes larger than themselves. The way he writes is simple yet beautiful, and easy for the common man to understand. Robert Jordan understands his small role in a conflict greater than he can fully comprehend, but he does his duty anyways, despite making the ultimate sacrifice in the end. We all need to keep in mind the larger picture, and the world we want to leave behind for future generations.
I believe the most important experiences a city councilperson can have is to have the same experiences as the people they represent. You can be the sharpest, most qualified person on the planet, but if you don't know the barriers and issues that your constituents face, your policies will reflect this.
