Mike Jaspers is a former South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture. He was appointed by Governor Dennis Daugaard (R) on June 7, 2016, to replace interim Secretary Dustin Oedekoven.[1] Oedekoven had been appointed on March 23, 2016 after previous Secretary Lucas Lentsch resigned.[2] Jaspers served until December 2018.

Jaspers served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 1997 to 2005. President George W. Bush appointed him state director of USDA rural development in 2007; he served in the position for a year.

At the time of his appointment as secretary of agriculture, Jaspers operated a large corn, soybean, and cattle farm and served as vice chairman of the board for Sioux Falls Catholic schools.[3]

Jaspers is married to former Secretary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch's sister, Robin.[1]

Jaspers served as interim South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture from June 2016 to December 2018.[1]

South Dakota state Senate (2003-2005)

Jaspers was appointed on June 7, 2003, by Governor Mike Rounds (R) to fill the vacancy of Mitch Richter. Richter resigned shortly after he was elected; he never served in the office.[4] Jaspers resigned his position from the House of Representatives in order to assume the post.

Jaspers was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996. He served until 2003, when he was appointed to fill an empty seat in the state Senate by Governor Mike Rounds (R)

Jaspers was appointed as interim South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture on March 23, 2016 by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. "His [Jaspers'] background in agriculture production, policy and administration makes him a great fit to lead the department.” Daugaard stated.[1]
