Mike King is a former Colorado Executive Director of Natural Resources. King began serving in the position in May 2010 after his appointment by then-Governor Bill Ritter. He was reappointed as director by Ritter's successor, Governor John Hickenlooper, after Hickenlooper took office in January 2011.[1]

He announced on December 17, 2015, that he would step down effective January 31, 2016. His resignation was part of a string of resignations by veteran officials Hickenlooper's administration. The governor said in a statement that King would take a new job as director of planning at Denver Water.[2]

Before becoming executive director, King was assistant director for lands, minerals and energy policy from 2000 to 2006 and deputy director of natural resources from 2006 to 2010. He previously worked in various capacities in the Policy and Regulation Section of the Colorado Division of Wildlife and was also an assistant state attorney general from 1993 to 1999. King obtained a B.A. in journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a J.D. from the University of Denver and an M.P.A. from the University of Colorado at Denver.[3]

King and his wife, Amy, have three children.[3]

Political career

Executive Director of Natural Resources (2010-2016)

King was first appointed to the position in May 2010 and re-appointed by incoming Governor John Hickenlooper in January 2011. As the executive director serves at the pleasure of the governor, King was not subject to periodic reappointment, except when a new governor takes office.[4] He stepped down on January 31, 2016, in order to assume a position as the director of planning for Denver Water.[5]
