A vote about whether to recall Mike Lout from his elected position as mayor of Jasper, Texas, took place on May 12th, 2012.[1] Lout was retained in office.[2]
Background
In November 2011, two of three black city council members who had voted to hire Jasper's first black police chief were recalled.
Recall organizers
A group called Justice for Jasper was behind the recall effort against Lout. The recall petition states:
"Mike Lout has brought disgrace and dishonor to the office of mayor and to the city of Jasper. As grounds for which this petition is predicated, Mike Lout is charged with incompetence, misconduct and malfeasance in office as evident by the fact that Mike Lout removed lawfully placed items on the agenda for the city council dated Aug. 8, 2011. Mike Lout promised the job of chief of police to an employee prior to the vote of a city council and Mike Lout participated in the dissemination of personal information of a law officer and exposing that officer and his family to the public all of which has harmed the citizens of Jasper."[3]
Path to the ballot
In September 2011, recall organizers submitted 545 signatures to the city secretary. 324 valid signatures were required.[4] A recall election took place on May 12, 2012. Lout was retained in office.
