I am the youngest of five children born to a single mother in lower class housing. I never knew people with my background could be in any position such as a judge, doctor or even president. My family went through many hardships. We were on public assistance. My older brothers were involved with the justice system. My sister was a teen parent at fifteen. At one point I had an abusive, alcoholic stepfather. After I went into the custody of my uncle and aunt, I was able to see a path to better opportunities.

I graduated high school and was the first of my family to go to college. After I graduated from Indiana University, I wanted to go into an industry where I could be of service to others. I decided that being a lawyer was the best career choice for me.

I worked to pay my own way through Capital University Law School, as I did for my undergraduate degree. After graduating, I served Franklin County as an assistant prosecuting attorney, and then went to work as a defense attorney with Cooper & Pennington. I currently serve as a magistrate in the Franklin County Juvenile Court System.

  • As a current judicial official I treat everyone who appears before me with dignity and respect.
  • I have been and will continue to serve the residents of Franklin County rather in or out of court.
  • Representation matters, there are a lot of people who come into the courtroom and do not have anyone in the room who understands their background and their story. I hope to be that person who understands.
The people I look up to are the people who are out in the community trying to make the world a better place one community at a time. Those are the unsung heroes who do what they do because it is the right thing to do, not for any recognition.
To be fair and impartial and to be open to new ideas.
I strive to run an efficient courtroom and to be fair and respectful to all who appear in front of me. I have been told that I have an extraordinary amount of patience when dealing with people from all walks of life.
That of a good person who tried his best to help others and to make the world a little bit better.
My first job was as a bag boy at Kroger when I was 15 or 16 years old. I worked there for about one year.
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho as it is all about following your dreams.
I always have a song in my head and it changes depending on where I am and what I am doing. I like all kinds of music and rarely stick to just one genre.
I have always been a bit ashamed of my upbringing. This campaign has shown me that I should be proud of where I come from and what I have achieved so far in my life.
Everyone deserves an opportunity to be heard no matter who they are and what resources they possess.
Empathy can help understand those that come before a judge, but the judge must still uphold the law.
Yes, I was awarded a 5-star rating by the Columbus Bar Association, the highest rating available.
It is an opportunity to continue to work with and amongst the people in Franklin County as I have for the last 14 plus years.
Having previous experience can help a person navigate the ins and outs of the position.
Right now I am focused on the court that I hope to be elected to. I want to immerse myself into the job at hand and make the most of it for myself and more importantly for the community I will continue to serve.
Not necessarily, but it can be an indicator of how the practicing lawyers view the person.
