Born and raised in Long Beach, Mike is a proud member of the community he has spent his personal & professional life serving. He is committed to community service, business development and preserving our environment. After graduating from Wilson High School and USC with a degree in International Relations, Mike worked as a public servant for the LA County Board of Supervisors. Mike was then recruited to join Earth Tech, where he helped develop and implement a strategic initiative for several major cities, to design, build, finance and operate (DBFO) water/wastewater treatment plants. In 2002, Mike took his passion for working with elected officials and opened Murchison Consulting. His focus was to assist clients with their business needs relating to government processes, specifically how municipalities operate and what requirements they have. Over the past twenty years, Mike’s leadership and advocacy has led to some of the region's most environmentally sustainable developments. He recently testified in front of the Long Beach Water Commission to advocate for the community to vote against raising water rates. He has also worked with the Long Beach Water Development on behalf of his clients regarding stormwater treatment, rules, and regulations. Most recently, he supported his client on the restoration & preservation of the Los Cerritos Wetlands. He has volunteered countless hours on nonprofit boards and continues to give back to his community in many ways.
  • Create a strategic plan to address droughts & climate impacts on water storage. We need to find ways to be proactive to diversify our water supplies, enhance our ecosystem and improve conservation.
  • We are in a recession, inflation is out of control, and we are faced with severe mega droughts. We need to be proactive immediately by focusing on our aging water infrastructure by reviewing all our facilities
  • Fiscal responsibility & accountability is essential. Examine appropriate compensation for water executives to ensure we are allocating funds on projects and not bloated salaries.
Water rates, infrastructure, future storage and new technologies.
Integrity, honesty, caring, passionate with a ,"roll up sleeves" mentality.
I am running for the newly re-districted Water Replenishment District, because I believe this position deserves someone with a history of delivering results. I have the experience working through government red tape to expedite projects based upon long standing relationships at all levels of government. I have worked with multiple agencies over the years including cities, counties, the California Coastal Commission, and the Army Corp Of Engineers. Of the three candidates, I am the only one with this experience!
National studies indicate that, on average, 14% of the water treated by current water systems is lost due to leaks. Some water systems have reported water losses exceeding 60%. Accounting for water and minimizing water loss are critical functions for any water utility that wants to be sustainable. My plan is to do a thorough analysis of our current infrastructure to determine what needs to be upgraded immediately. In addition, we must create the proper storage network of water to ensure that we have enough supply to make it through these ongoing and worsening droughts. In order to accomplish this, we need to identify new technologies (perhaps that other agencies are already using) and implement them at WRD. We critically need to capture 100% of stormwater and we must have more resources to clean that water, which means exploring desalination plants
