I am a husband to my amazing wife Carolyn, a local business owner, and a candidate for the Republican party in the Idaho State House District 14 Seat A.

Idaho allowed me to get an education. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, earning my bachelor's degree at Boise State University. I went on to earn dual degrees in law, after which I provided tax advice on mergers and acquisitions before became a tax attorney for a Shell Oil company.

I have since returned to Idaho where I own and run a successful family business. I have spent years fighting as a tax attorney for public companies, fighting as a business owner for my own company and I would like to use that experience to now fight for you in the Idaho State House.
  • Idaho should be leading the nation in tax competitiveness. As it stands today, Idaho isn't even one of the 10 most competitive states for business tax climate according to the Tax Foundation. I will work to cut taxes for all Idahoans and make Idaho the most competitive state for individuals and businesses.
  • We have all seen over the last couple years the power that regulators can have over the daily lives of Americans. I believe all Idahoans should be given more control over their daily lives and the power of regulators to decide how we interact needs to be curtailed.
  • As a first generation college graduate from a public university in Idaho, I believe the state has a role to invest in making sure the children of Idaho get the best education possible. The state should ensure parents and children have a choice with how and where their public dollars are spent by making sure that education dollars follow the children--whether that be in public schools, STEM schools, technical schools or private schools.
I am especially passionate and knowledgeable about tax policy.

When Idaho has it's second record budget surplus in two years, this time $1.9 billion and counting, it's a clear sign Idaho's citizens are being overtaxed. With my background practicing as a tax attorney where my job was to know the tax code, regulations and rules inside and out, I have the ability to understand how to get real tax cuts.
I look up to my late father, Gregg Olsen. When he convinced me to come back to Idaho and help build and run a family business, I never could have imagined these were the last five years I would have with him. He taught me so much in that time, but the three main lessons I learned from him and incorporate into my daily life:

(1) Always keep talking because once you shut down conversation you can't find common ground.

(2) Set lofty goals, because the greatest danger lies not in setting your goals to high and coming close but in setting them too low and achieving them.

(3) Focus on what you want, not what you don't.
I will give one video, three books and three podcasts to help understand the primary influences on my political philosophy.

Video
A Time for Choosing by Ronald Reagan: https://youtu.be/qXBswFfh6AY. This speech is as important and as relevant in 2022 as it was in 1964. "A government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth."

Books
1.) Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedman - This book teaches that economic freedom is indispensable to political freedom.
2.) Vindicating Lincoln by Thomas L. Krannawitter - This book teaches that certain truths of freedom and equality are universal and should not be viewed as a construct of their time.
3.) Principles for a Free Society by Richard Epstein - This book provides principles for governing that takes into account the consequences of actions and strives to leave everyone at least as well off as they were before implementation of policies.

Podcasts
1.) Ruthless by Comfortably Smug, Josh Holmes and Michael Duncan - These guys provide weekly political commentary and animal news with light humor.
2.) The Megyn Kelly Show by Megyn Kelly - Megyn has done a great job highlighting the harm done to children during the pandemic over the last few years.

3.) The Joe Rogan Experience by Joe Rogan - Joe's podcast is a daily lesson on the importance of free speech. I may not agree with the host or the guests all the time, but Joe always keeps it interesting and listening to his podcast is important if only as a fortress against cancel culture.
The three most important characteristics an elected official should possess are:

(1) Be a representative for the interests of your district;
(2) Be honest (i.e., say what you mean and mean what you say); and

(3) Always remember you work for the people, not the other way around.
The legislature only meets three months out of the year so you need someone that is going to take the time to understand the process and be as effective as possible in accomplishing objectives in this short time period. I am calm and collected under extreme pressure; and can maintain exceptional communication and problem solving skills under duress.
Someone elected to this office needs to know and represent the interests of their constituents every day they are at the legislature. To effectively know the interests of their district this official should to meet with constituents through door knocking, phone calls, meetings, lunches, coffees and any other way the voters want to meet. When representing the interests in the legislature this person needs to build relationships with other legislators and make every effort to be as effective an advocate as possible for the voters of this district.
I would like to leave Idaho better than it was when I took office. This means making sure Idaho citizens have low
I remember being 14 and in eighth grade, walking to school when my classmate ran out of her house and told me a plane had just hit the twin towers. When we arrived to school we got the news that they had fallen.
My very first job was bagging groceries. I held this job the summer of 2003 while school was out.
How Bad Do You Want It: Mind Over Muscle. Growing up I played a tone of sports: hockey, football, soccer, baseball, and bodybuilding; while the sports may have been different the mindset required was consistent, I had to have the will to win and put in the work. This book provides anecdotes of setbacks suffered by endurance athletes, which was easy for me to relate to now that I run marathons and racing triathlons, but more importantly it is told in a captivating fashion by the author and has been applicable in every aspect of my life.
Ironman. It's the first one that came to my head and it's hard to beat Tony Stark.
Someone Like You - Adele. It was a slow-paced song that came on in a fast paced workout class, all the words came to my head and I couldn't get it out due to the incongruity with the quick pace of the workout.
My father was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2021 and after nine months of doing everything possible to beat the cancer, we lost him in December of 2021. He grew up in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. He raised me and my brothers in Anchorage, Alaska and moved us down to Idaho in 2005 because he loved and missed Idaho so much. In running for this seat I hope to make him proud and make sure Idaho remains the State he loved.
The legislature and the governor should work together where possible, disagree where necessary, and ensure that no body is exercising the power properly belonging to another department of government as enshrined in Article II of the Constitution of the State of Idaho.
Idaho's greatest challenges over the next decade are:

(1) Educating it's kids while ensuring they can afford to live here after school;

(2) Lowering taxes and making sure the state is not overtaxing it's citizens; and

(3) Ensuring Idaho remains the beacon of freedom for other states to emulate.
Idaho does not have a unicameral legislature and I would not promote one.
I believe people bring their experiences with them in whatever endeavor they pursue. Prior government or political experience can be beneficial to the extent it creates a shorter learning curve and allows people to learn from past mistakes, but it is detrimental when it causes someone to be detached from the everyday concerns of their voters.
It is absolutely beneficial to build relationships with other legislators. Legislators should build relationships with their voters to know and understand the interests of their constituents. To ensure those interests are reflected in legislation, legislators must build relationships with each other.
I believe the redistricting process should be as open and transparent as possible. Voters should be the ones to pick their politicians, not the other way around.
Yes, I would be interested in being on the following committees, in this order:

1.) Revenue and Taxation,
2.) Ways and Means,
3.) Education,
4.) Health and Welfare, and

5.) Business
I am not looking for a career in politics, already own and run my own business. I am running for the State House to make and keep Idaho a conservative state with a positive tax climate where businesses and families flourish.
Sometimes we don't appreciate what we have until they are taken away. A local mom told me that prior to the last couple of years, she did not attend a single school board meeting. Since the pandemic began and she saw the actions taken by some of the school boards, she has not missed a single meeting. Her involvement tells me the voters are desperate for leadership that will empower parents.
Q: How do you fit an elephant in a Safeway bag?

You take the 'f' out of Safe and the 'f' out of way.

A: There is not 'f' in way.
Yes, the legislature should oversee the use of emergency powers. To avoid government by a single branch of government, emergency powers should be overseen by the legislature, short in duration and limited in scope.
Politics is the art of compromise. As long as what is being compromised on does not violate the liberties reserved to the individual, compromise is necessary to reach agreement. As my father taught me, always keep talking because once you shut down conversation you can't find common ground.
