Pence on immigration
- Discussing Donald Trump's immigration policy on CNN on August 28, 2016, Pence said, "There will be no path to legalization, no path to citizenship unless people leave the country."[1]
- In December 2014, Mike Pence announced his intent to file a lawsuit against President Barack Obama for his executive order protecting undocumented immigrants. He said, "While reasonable people can differ on ways to improve our nation's broken immigration system, the president's unilateral action was an unacceptable end run around the democratic process, and joining other states in pursuing legal recourse to challenge this action is the right thing to do."[2]
- In 2006, Pence voted for H.R.6095 - the Immigration Law Enforcement Act of 2006, which proposed affirming "that state and local law enforcement personnel have the inherent authority to investigate, identify, arrest, detain, or transfer to federal custody aliens in the United States (including the transportation of such aliens across state lines to detention centers) for purposes of assisting in the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws in the course of carrying out routine duties."[3]
- In 2006, Pence voted for H.R.6061 - the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which, among other things, required the construction of fencing along the U.S. – Mexico border. It became law on October 26, 2006.[4]
- In 2004, Pence voted for H.R.3722 - the Undocumented Alien Emergency Medical Assistance Amendments of 2004, which proposed requiring hospitals to provide the Secretary of Homeland Security with information about undocumented aliens seeking medical treatment.[5]
