Campaign themes

2016

Thompson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Economy

  • On the economy there is a lot we can be doing. We need to get the Polymet project going. 10 years of studies have proven time and time again that it can operate safely with minimal impact to the environment. The permitting process should move forward without any more road blocks. Projects like Polymet and Twin Metals would be a huge boost to our economy bringing badly needed jobs. We also need to help keep the small businesses all over our area open! We need more initiatives like the IRRRB’s “Recharge the Range”. The people directly impacted are our best resources and can help come up with real world solutions to keep Main Street’s doors open.Type your paragraph here.

Drugs

  • It’s no secret that we have a drug epidemic in our area. Everyone at one point in their life has been affected directly or indirectly by the impact of addiction. We need to focus on better mental health care to treat addiction and work with law enforcement across the state and give them the tools that they need to help stop the manufacturing and the slow of these terrible drugs.

Education

  • We need to make college education more affordable. It is ridiculous that in order to pursue higher education that you have to saddle yourself with a huge amount of debt. There are so many people effected by the burden of student loans (myself included). We need to make it easier for everyone with student debt to be able to refinance. For many people struggling with it, it is hard to get established. It's preventing people from being able to afford a mortgage or a new car payment. It's a problem that if it doesn't get addressed soon, we are headed for a big financial crisis in the near future.

Veterans

  • We need to take better care of our Veterans! Whether it be expanding our MN GI bill use or getting funding or bonding to repair Veterans facilities. Did you know that Minnesota is 1 of 5 states in the US to tax veterans' federal military pensions? That is wrong. These people fought for our freedom so it is our responsibility to fight for them at the Capitol.[1][2]
