Campaign themes
2016
Westphal's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Family values
- Excerpt: "Michigan needs to prioritize the needs of families. Vacation time is a necessity to a happy home and a positive work/life balance and Michigan's hard workers deserve paid time off to spend with their loved ones. Michigan also has a duty to provide paid maternity leave so mothers have a chance to bond with and care for their newborns without the fear of losing their employment or not being able to pay their bills. Paid time off not only benefits families, but also increases economic activity."
Economy and jobs
- Excerpt: "As the only state in the U.S. that lost population from 2000-2010, Michigan needs to reverse the trend of businesses leaving or failing in our state. We need to create an environment for businesses to flourish and also be involved members and contributors to our communities. I will support and expand cooperatives, worker-owned businesses, small and medium sized independent firms, public utilities, municipal enterprises, and new ways of banking and investing."
Education
- Excerpt: "We can no longer cut funding and overlook the importance of education in Michigan. Investing in public education needs to be made a top priority and is essential for all children in Michigan to have access to an excellent education - meaning smaller class sizes and teachers and staff that are not undermined by privatization. We need to give power back to teachers so they have the freedom to determine which curriculum is the most effective in their classrooms and we need to ensure every student has the opportunity to pursue higher education without accumulating crippling debt."
Voting and elections
- Excerpt: "In a thriving democracy, we should always be looking for ways to improve the voting process."
