Miko Pickett is a Volunteer Director for a non-profit organization founded by her husband, Pick 42 Foundation - Neighbors Helping Neighbors. In 2019 she was accepted as a James E. Clyburn Fellow. This Fellowship has allowed her to learn more about how to fulfill her passion to help South Carolina community members become active in decisions that impact our lives and the lives of our families.

Before fully embracing her work in the non-profit sector Miko had a long and successful career as an executive in the field of information technology. The non-profit founded by her husband, runs programs such as Project Disaster Recovery, Annual Toy Drive and Free Stores.

Miko is a wife, mother of 4 and Mimi of 2. She enjoys southern living, traveling, line dancing and music.
  • Disaster Recovery - I've been working to help our community recover from the back to back disasters since 2016 and now that we are in the midst of yet another disaster - I'm still at working helping community members
  • Increasing Minimum Wage - $7.25 for 12 long years - this is a SC problem and SC can fix it... Starting with the State House
  • Free Rural Broadband (WIFI) for all - If we didn't know before, we now know that being connected to high speed internet is extremely important to the success of district.
My passion runs deep in many areas of public policy, because at the end of the day, they ALL impact people. However, to narrow it down, it would be policies set as it relates to Economic Affairs, as I believe the priorities of the majority in our state are not focused on ensuring that every day citizens have success in their daily lives! My key message and platform issue is "Increasing Minimum Wage" , however, this MUST be done now, but not in a vacuum, we need to invest as a state into small businesses so they can compete and provide greater value to a new customer base that will be ready to purchase their serves and by their product.

Environment: My district has suffered from 4 federally declared natural disasters since 2015 including COVID-19. That is 4 Natural Disasters in 5 years. In a district where 2 of the counties struggle with 26% poverty. You do not have to dig deep at all to uncover the correlation between climate change and the super storms/hurricanes that destroy properties and livelihoods. It is my opinion that mitigation and prevention do not get enough funding or attention and when it does the process moves far to slow.

Lastly: Culture and Society... We live in a state that is constantly trying to lift up rights of some while constantly trying to take away the rights of others, such as women and poor workers. These decisions seem to be made strictly based on economics and that is not right.
I look up to so many people who influence me to become the woman I am today, starting with my Father, he is where I garnered my work ethic. First at work and the last to leave. My mother taught me from a little girl how to raise a family with love and care and I look up to her as a spiritual leader and the number one thing she has taught me is the pray without ceasing and to seek God first.

Lastly, from a political perspective I look up to Elizabeth Warren, and when I had to meet her in Florence, SC, it was literally an incredible experience to meet her in person. Senator Warrens fights for the everyday person and she does it with conviction and a plan. She autographed a book for me with one simple word...Persist! This is exactly my intention.
I'd like to leave a legacy of service to others and community. I'd like to see students start at an early age with exposure to helping their fellow man through service and volunteerism. When we help one person, we help many!
I have one very fond memory of America's Bicentennial celebration in 1976. I was 7 years old and I recall have my bicycle all decorated in red, white and blue and participating in a parade. FUN TIMES!
My very first job was as a department store Dry Goods. My job was to take folded towels out of the shipment box, unfold them (because the folded towels 2 at a time) and then refold them to stock. This made NO sense to me... I had that job for 2 weeks! I'm still not sure I received a paycheck.
My answer to this question could be complicated. I do believe that having experience in any role provides the legislator with the ability to make things happen for their district/constituency. However, it seems in so many cases that this experience can also create a major problem, both with the legislator and the constituency, with the legislator if and when they focus on their personal agendas vs the great needs of the people who they where hired to represent and with the constituency, because they can get too tied up on a "Household Name" and forget why they elect legislators.

I personally do not have any experience in government, however I recently served as First Vice Chair for the Marion County Democratic Party and I am a James E. Clyburn Fellow. I believe that key to my success in office is my vast business experience, both as a corporate executive with 30 years experience and a small business owner! I will use the skills I've garnered in my career to provide leadership in everything I do and to make a difference for all in my District.
Yes, I am a firm believer in establishing sound relationships, even when we have different politics. The key to my business successes have always been to have sound relationships. As the rep in the State House, I will go out of my to not only establish relationships with other state legislators, I will also go out of my way to establish working relationships with all of the local officials from Mayor to Fire Chief. It is with these working relationships that we can all work together for the benefit of our district.
