Path to the ballot
On June 1, 1857, Minnesota voters elected delegates to represent them at a constitutional convention.[1] Between June 13 and August 29, 1857, the state constitutional convention worked by conference committee.[1] Due to the political division at the time, Democratic delegates and Republican delegates refused to sign the same copy of the state constitution.[2] As such, delegates from the two parties signed two different copies of the state constitution.[3] The two copies were essentially identical, though they were copied by hand and did contain grammar and punctuation differences.[3] The schedule of the constitution provided for an election for the voters to ratify the constitution on October 13, 1857.[1]
