Minnie Forte-Brown
Minnie Forte-Brown was a member of the Durham Public Schools school board in North Carolina, representing District A. Forte-Brown left office on July 6, 2020.
Forte-Brown ran for re-election to the Durham Public Schools school board to represent District A in North Carolina. Forte-Brown won in the general election on March 15, 2016.
Biography
Forte-Brown graduated from Hillside High School and earned a bachelor's degree in speech and English from Saint Augustine’s College and a master’s degree in speech pathology and audiology from North Carolina Central University. She served as a member of the North Carolina School Board Association Board of Directors and was a former member of the board of directors for the National School Board Association. She worked as a communications specialist and master teacher in the Department of English and Mass Communications at North Carolina Central University.[1]

Three of the seven seats on the Durham Public Schools school board were up for general election on March 15, 2016. The race for the at-large seat saw two newcomers file for it: Frederick Ravin III and Steve Unruhe. Unruhe secured the at-large seat. District A incumbent Minnie Forte-Brown and newcomer candidate for District B Xavier Cason ran unopposed and won. Write-in votes were allowed.[2]
This marked the second consecutive unopposed election for Forte-Brown. The number of candidates for the Durham school board elections had varied over the last four election cycles. From 2010 to 2016, the district saw five unopposed races and four races with two candidates each; the other five races held during this period saw three or more candidates.

Funding
Forte-Brown reported no contributions or expenditures to the Durham County Board of Elections as of March 22, 2016.
School board candidates in North Carolina are required to file campaign finance reports to their county's board of elections unless the candidate:
(1) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in contributions, and
(2) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in loans, and
(3) Does not spend more than one thousand dollars ($1,000).[3]
The first quarter campaign finance deadline was on March 7, 2016.
