Eaton ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Pennsylvania's 3rd District. Eaton sought the nomination on the Democratic ticket. She was unopposed in the April 24 Democratic primary and hoped to unseat incumbent Rep. Mike Kelly (R) in the general election on November 6.[3]

The Washington Post listed the House of Representatives elections in Pennsylvania in 2012 as one of the 10 states that could have determined whether Democrats retake the House or if Republicans would hold their majority in 2013.[4] Ohio tied with Pennsylvania for 9th on the list.[4]
