Four of the seven seats on the Mission Consolidated Independent School District board of trustees were up for general election on May 7, 2016. Incumbent Veronica Mendoza ran against challenger Sonia Treviño for the Place 2 seat. The race for the open Place 3 seat featured candidates Hector Gonzalez and Jerry Zamora. In Place 4, incumbent Patricia O'Cana-Olivarez faced challenger Marina Salinas. Place 5 incumbent J.C. Avila ran against challenger Charlie Garcia III.[1][2] Treviño defeated incumbent Mendoza in the Place 2 race and in the Place 5 race incumbent Avila was defeated by Garcia. Zamora won in Place 3, knocking Gonzalez out of the race, and O'Cana-Oliverez defeated Salinas in Place 4.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Mission Consolidated Independent Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected by district to four-year terms. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. Seats are up for election on a staggered basis every even-numbered year in May. The general election for the Place 2, 3, 4 and 5 seats was held on May 7, 2016. There is no primary election.[4] The Place 1, 6 and 7 seats were up for election in 2014.

To get on the ballot, candidates had to file with the school district by February 19, 2016.[5] Individuals seeking school board office had to be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens and residents of the district for six months prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[6]

Mission Consolidated Independent School District is located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The county seat is Edinburg. The county's population was 842,304 in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[10] The district was the 74th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 15,372 students.[11]

Demographics

Hidalgo County underperformed in comparison to Texas as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 16.4 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $34,952, while it was $52,576 for the state. The county poverty rate was 33.5 percent, compared to state's 17.2 percent.[12]
