The 4th Congressional District of Mississippi held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012. Steven Palazzo was re-elected on November 6, 2012.[1]

Primary: Mississippi has an open primary system, meaning any registered voter can vote in any party's primary.

Voter registration: Voters had to register to vote in the primary by February 11, 2012. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 6, 2012.[2]

Incumbent: Heading into the election was incumbent Steven Palazzo (R), who had served since 2011.

This was the first election using district maps based on data from the 2010 Census. Mississippi's 4th Congressional District was located in the southeastern portion of the state and includes Marion, Lamar, Pearl River, Hancock, Harrison, Stone, Forrest, Jones, Perry, Jackson, George, Greene, Wayne, and Clarke counties.[3]

This is the 4th Congressional District prior to the 2010 redistricting.

The 4th District was re-drawn after the 2010 Census. The new district was composed of the following percentages of voters of the old congressional districts.[9][10]

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Mississippi's 4th District saw no change in partisanship due to redistricting.[11]

Cook Political Report's PVI

In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measured each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Mississippi's 4th Congressional District had a PVI of R+20 which was the 20th most Republican district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by John McCain (R), 69-31 percent over Barack Obama (D). In 2004, George W. Bush (R) won the district 69-31 percent over John Kerry (D).[12]

2010

On November 2, 2010, Palazzo won election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Gene Taylor (D), Anna Jewel Revies (Reform), and Kenneth "Tim" Hampton in the general election.[13]
