The Mississippi Executive Director of Environmental Quality is a state executive position in the Mississippi state government.
The executive director of environmental quality oversees the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, which was created in 1989 to replace the Mississippi Department of Natural Resources.[1] The department is charged with protecting the environment and administering most U.S. Environmental Protection Agency programs. It also monitors, models, and regulates water use and functions as the state geological survey.[2]

The current Mississippi Executive Director of Environmental Quality is Chris Wells (nonpartisan). Wells assumed office in 2020.
Authority
In 1989, the Mississippi State Legislature created the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality which replaced the Department of Natural Resources.[1]
The position is established in Title 49, Chapter 2 of Mississippi Code:[3]

The department shall be headed by an executive director who shall be appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the Governor. The appointment of the executive director shall be made with the advice and consent of the Senate. |

A master's degree in a field related to natural resources, and at least six (6) years' full-time experience in natural resources, including at least three (3) years of management experience; or A bachelor's degree in a field related to natural resources or administration and at least eight (8) years of full-time work in the field of natural resources, including four (4) years of management experience |
