Mississippi set for special elections in January 2011

JACKSON, Mississippi: The candidates are in and Mississippi is all set for two state legislative special elections to be held on January 11, 2011. With the qualifying deadline for candidates ending December 10, Mississippi voters must now begin the task of deciding on a new state senator and a new state representative.[1] Interestingly, special election ballots in Mississippi do not identify the party of candidates.[2]
State Senate District 6
The first open seat is for state Senate District 6. This became vacant when Republican Patrick Nunnelee resigned November 15, 2010 after being elected to U.S. Congress[3]
Candidates for this seat are as follows:[4]
- Doug Wright
- Mike Bryan
- Stacy Scott
- Nancy Adams Collins
- Melony Armstrong
- Johnny Davis
State House District 116
The second vacant seat is for state House District 116. This was vacated by Republican Steven Palazzo, who also resigned on November 15, 2010 after being elected to U.S. Congress.
Candidates for this seat are as follows:[5]
- Jim Atchison, owner of a Biloxi real estate company
- Casey Eure, Biloxi small business owner
- Travis Burke, D'Iberville small-business owner
- Jamie Creel, former state legislator
- Todd Echelberry, Medicare auditor
- Jess Hogue, teacher at Virginia College
- Quentin Lyles, D'Iberville business owner
- Chuck Stein, Biloxi salesman
Mississippi voters will also be electing a new Northern District Transportation Commissioner. This position was left vacant after the death of Bill Minor.
