Mississippians to vote next week in August Primary

JACKSON, Mississippi: The August primary will be held on August 2 in the state of Mississippi, local races across the state will have the chance to be decided and choose who will face off in November. Residents of Mississippi have until July 30 to turn in absentee ballots. Mississippi has a closed primary election meaning residents can only vote on one party ticket.[1] In Joplin, residents will have the chance to vote on extending the sales tax in the city which goes towards maintaining the parks storm water improvement costs.[2]
In George County, the race for Sheriff will see a rematch from the 2010 election. The county Superintendent, Constable, Board of Supervisors and Justice Court Judge will also be decided.[3] In DeSoto County, of the 86,797 registered voters in the county, only 494 had voted absentee so far. Though county officials note that the pace has picked up. County position up for election include the Tax Collector, Sheriff, Justice Court Judge and Supervisors.[4]
