Primary: A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Missouri utilizes an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[1][2][3]
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.
Voter registration: To vote in the primary, voters had to register by June 9, 2014. For the general election, the voter registration deadline was October 8, 2014.[4]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent was Blaine Luetkemeyer (R), who was first elected in 2008. Prior to redistricting due to the 2010 census, he served as the representative of Missouri's 9th Congressional District. The district had previously elected Democratic candidates from 1948 until the 2012 election.[5] The 2010 midterm election was the closest a Republican came in over a decade to winning the seat with Democratic incumbent Russ Carnahan defeating challenger Ed Martin in the general election by 2.2 percent of the popular vote.[6]
Missouri's 3rd Congressional District is located in the eastern portion of the state and includes Callaway, Cole, Franklin, Gasconade, Lincoln, Maries, Miller, Montgomery, Osage, and Warren counties as well as areas of Camden, Jefferson and St. Charles counties. [7]
