The 7th Congressional District of Missouri held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012.
Billy Long was re-elected on November 6, 2012.[1] The primary elections were held on August 7, 2012.
Heading into the election the incumbent was Billy Long (R), who was first elected to the House in 2010.
This was the first election that used new district maps based on 2010 Census data. Missouri's 7th Congressional District was located in the southwestern portion of the state and included Polk, Greene, Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Lawrence, Barry, Stone, Christian, Taney, and Webster counties.[2]

Missouri lost a congressional seat following the results of the 2010 Census, bringing its number of representatives down to eight. Redistricting increased the population of the 7th District.

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Missouri's 7th District became less Republican because of redistricting.[5]

Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Missouri's 7th Congressional District had a PVI of R+17, which was the 32nd most Republican district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by John McCain (R), 64-36 percent over Barack Obama (D). In 2004, George W. Bush (R) won the district 68-32 percent over John Kerry (D).[6]

2010
On November 2, 2010, Billy Long was elected to the United States House. He defeated Scott Eckersley (D), Kevin Craig (Libertarian), and Nicholas Ivan Ladendorf (Write-in).[7]
