The 8th Congressional District of Missouri held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012.
Jo Ann Emerson was re-elected on November 6, 2012.[1] The primary elections were held on August 7, 2012.
Heading into the election the incumbent was Jo Ann Emerson (R), who was first elected to the House in 2010.
This was the first election that used new district maps based on 2010 Census data. Missouri's 8th Congressional District was located in the southeastern portion of the state and included Ozark, Douglas, Wright, Texas, Howell, Oregon, Shannon, Dent, Phelps, Crawford, Jefferson, Washington, St. Francis, Ste Genevieve, Iron, Reynolds, Carter, Ripley, Butler, Wayne, Madison, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Scott, Stoddard, New Madrid, and Mississippi counties.[2]

Missouri lost a congressional seat following the results of the 2010 Census, bringing its number of representatives down to eight.

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Missouri's 8th District became less Republican because of redistricting.[6]

Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Missouri's 8th Congressional District had a PVI of R+13, which was the 74th most Republican district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by John McCain (R), 61-39 percent over Barack Obama (D). In 2004, George W. Bush (R) won the district 62-38 percent over John Kerry (D).[7]

2010
On November 2, 2010, Jo Ann Emerson was re-elected to the United States House for an eighth term. She defeated Tommy Sowers (D), Larry Bill (Independent), and Rick Vandeven (Libertarian).[8]
