What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Luke Barber (D)

Disability policy and social work. Many times services that are necessary are told there just is no funding available for providers. we need someone who will be willing to stand up and challenge the status quo to bring real change and real solutions to the problems facing our constituents.

Many times we have seen unintended segregation and discrimination and have a track record of fighting against it.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Listen to their constituents.

Determined for creating impactful changes.

Perseverance to get the laws passed. Often bills don't pass in the first year. On Average a bill usually is passed between three to five years.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Luke Barber (D)

Listen to the needs of the community - I will have meetings and Town halls with constituents. Respects Democracy - understands and respects the vote.

What legacy would you like to leave?

Luke Barber (D)

Willing to fight for accessibility and inclusion. As a person who has been diagnosed with Autism, I have seen and faced these issues firsthand. I would like for all individuals with disabilities to have equal opportunity and to be able to live their lives like anyone else.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Luke Barber (D)

Autism spectrum disorder and societal expectations of fitting in or acting 'Normal'. I have had to live with a diagnosis of disability and receive many social services over the years.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

Luke Barber (D)

The Governor is the Executive branch of the State. The Governor can Sign or Veto bills. The governor also Nominates appointments for commissions and boards. The Senate Confirms those Nominees if qualified to serve on the boards and commissions. The House and Senate make up the Legislature. The Legislature drafts and votes on bills, which is also debated and discussed on the Floor of the chambers.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

Lack of social services for the poor and disabled. Crumbling and outdated infrastructure, such as the internet and roads.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Luke Barber (D)

I believe experience in public policy, government, or politics is preferred for those elected. However, I wouldn't say that those are the only experiences that should be used to decide our politicians and elected. The experience could include their education, their employment, or their lived experiences.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Luke Barber (D)

I prefer a Non - Partisan Independent Approach. I wish the maps

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

Luke Barber (D)

It truly depends on the issue. Compromise is a double-edged sword. In some ways, compromise can make a bill stronger and in others, it can make it more watered down or weaker.

While compromise might be necessary for passage, we should also look to see how the changes proposed will impact the bill.

In some ways compromise may be necessary or desirable, but not if it will impact the effect of the legislation in negative ways.
