Mohamed Farah was a candidate for Ward 9 representative on the Minneapolis City Council in Minnesota. He was defeated in the general election on November 7, 2017.

Although municipal elections in Minneapolis are officially nonpartisan, candidates can choose a party affiliation to appear on the ballot.[1] Farah ran as a DFL candidate.[2]

Farah earned a degree in manufacturing engineering technology from Hennepin Technical College and a degree in manufacturing management from the University of Minnesota. His experience includes work as the executive director of the nonprofit organization Ka Joog and as a project manager for Element Materials Technology.[3][4]

Minneapolis, Minnesota, held a general election for mayor, all 13 seats on the city council, both elected members of the board of estimate and taxation, and all nine members of the park and recreation board on November 7, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was August 15, 2017.

Incumbents ran for re-election to all but two of the city council seats. Ward 3 Councilman Jacob Frey filed to run for mayor instead, and Ward 8 Councilwoman Elizabeth Glidden opted not to run for re-election.[5]

Campaign themes

2017

Farah's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

1. Economic Development:

a. Improve economic and employment opportunities for all residents in Ward 9.
b. Build relationships with local businesses throughout Minnesota and bring investments to our Ward.
c. Develop a community-based round table to work with Ward 9 residents, city hall, prospective and existing businesses, as well as the medical community to market the 9th ward a place to do business and recruit new investment without disrupting local residents.This will be modeled after and built on the accomplishments of the Phillips Partnership.

2. Support for small business:

a. Hold the Special Service Districting accountable for attaining the community and business objectives. This includes both the Special Service Districts themselves as well as city hall oversight.
b. Create a Service District on Lake Street that encompasses both Phillips and Power horn communities running from 35W to Hiawatha.
c. Establish ongoing, consistent engagement with the Lake Street Business Association, Phillips West and Midtown Phillips to ensure the accomplishment of all their objectives.
d. Achieve a 98% occupancy rate in storefronts on Lake Street from 35W to Hiawatha. This includes the appropriate development of any vacant parcels within the corridor.

3. Safety:

a. Work with citizens, police, businesses, judiciary and all others to keep our neighborhoods safe.
b. Promote the activation of community policing, police accountability, and the furtherance of the networks of block clubs. This includes the review and development of new measures of reporting in 911 response and – when necessary – advocate for additional resources and strategies to advance community safety goals.
c. Initiate a balanced approach to the needs of the business and medical community for access to goods and services while continuing to enhance bike land plans (bike safety) in a manner the meets everyone’s needs.[6]
