Mohamud Jama was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. He earned an associate degree from Columbus State Community College in 2004. He earned a bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in 2015. Jama's career experience includes working as an electrical engineer.^[1]

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Tom is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and served 22 years on active duty, retiring as a LtCol. He also has 3 graduate degrees; one in Public Administration from Troy State, an MBA from Pepperdine, and an Ed.S from George Washington University. Tom is also a graduate of Squadron Officer's School, Air War Command and Staff, and Air War College. Tom’s military service was exemplary, earning him six Meritorious Service Medals, which is an unheard of accomplishment. Tom also received a commendation from then-President George H. W. Bush, for whom he is very proud to have served under. In his civilian career, Tom has worked for 4 cities and a county, including being a Town Manager. Tom also lead and managed the Reagan Ballistic Test Site in the South Pacific as a government contractor. Tom is running to be the next Governor of Nevada in order to give voice to the silent majority, focusing on common sense solutions that produce successful outcomes. Tom is committed to cutting the budget by 10%, Freedom of Speech protections, supporting law enforcement, stopping CRT in our public schools and teaching patriotism, prohibiting mask and vaccine mandates, supporting school choice by fully funding the school voucher program, Voter I.D. , repealing the Commerce Tax, free market energy sources, instilling an OIG, implementing culture change to make government more responsive to Nevadans, improving Nevada's national rankings, and passing constitutional carry laws.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Tom’s decision to run for Nevada Governor is grounded in his commitment to Nevada, America, and his fellow Americans. Tom recognizes that we are at a cross roads in our country and in our state. Tom believes we must either come together to embark on the serious business of reigniting our shared responsibility and commitment to ensure the American Dream remains vibrant or run the risk that the American Dream will die. Tom understands that our task is a daunting one but not insurmountable. Tom believes we must ensure those who represent us in all branches of state government must be purposefully focused on doing the right things for Nevadans to safeguard the American Dream. Tom believes leaders must focus on providing opportunities and improving outcomes for all Americans rather than on the cronyism which exists today, including the “good old boy” system we have here in Nevada. Tom believes we must root out those in elected positions and those in the bureaucracy who are more concerned about keeping their jobs than doing their jobs. Furthermore, Tom believes leadership requires courage and strength of character to get things done.

Tom will never forget that he works for the people of Nevada and will solely focus on doing what’s best for all Nevadans.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I have always considered my Dad to be my hero. He was a Marine that fought in World War II and Korea, receiving two Purple Hearts. He was a professional football and baseball player. He played for the San Francisco 49ers. He had a bachelors degree in Physical Education and a master degree in history.

Dad was a head coach for several high school football teams over eight years. Later, my Dad was the Assistant Principle at my high school in Naples, FL. Dad always found time to play sports with his three boys -- everything from baseball and football to basketball, table tennis and bowling.

He was always had high expectations for his boys. No matter when and where Dad was always available to help or provide advise. He was my true hero!

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am a student and practitioner of leadership. A vote for me puts a strong, tough leader in Carson City who has protected American freedoms for 23 years while on active duty in the United States Air Force. I have a history of successfully making some of the toughest life and death decisions real leaders are called to make. I never give up until the job is successfully completed. Many of my military colleagues referred to me as the "Ever Ready Bunny" and "The Man with the Plan" because I never stop working until I achieve successful outcomes. I will always stay focused on improving outcomes for our Great State and the people who live, work and play here. I have an innate ability to find better ways of doing business for less and I have a history of facilitating solutions that have solved a myriad of problems while implementing significant improvements for people and communities. I will never forget that I work for Nevadans. I will solely focus on doing what’s best for all Nevadans and ensuring Nevada’s government works for you!

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I believe the core responsibility for the person elected to be the next Nevada Governor is to be a leader. This includes:

a commitment to always doing the next right thing regardless of potential political fallout;
truth telling;
a commitment to putting the needs of Nevadans over political cronyism;
setting standards and holding people on the public dole accountable;
judicious management of our states resources including people, dollars and infrastructure;
only hiring the best and the brightest people to serve Nevadans;
benchmarking with those states who do things better than we currently do here in Nevada to ensure the quality of life of our citizens;

ensuring government is effective, efficient and responsive to its citizens (i.e., answering phones, returning phone calls, helping Nevadans navigate the bureaucracy and finding ways to satisfy their needs).

What is your favorite book? Why?

I love the Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn books. I've enjoyed these books because they depict strong leaders who overcome adversities by using their mental and physical strengths and tenacity. Their characters never give up, which is a motto I live by.

A governor is the top executive authority in his or her state. What does that mean do you?

Being the governor of a state requires one to understand, embrace, and in all aspects of the position, have the strength, character, and the courage to lead. Leadership is not always found in those who seek political office because being a leader requires one to do the next right thing for the right reason even when there may be political fall-out for doing so. Too many politicians fail to develop the intestinal fortitude to do the next right thing because they are more concerned with keeping their jobs than doing their jobs. I believe successful state governors must have exemplary leadership competencies and executive management skills. These include leading people, leading change, engaging important stakeholders, business acumen, and political astuteness. I also believe successful state governors must always be willing to listen to dissenting views and to ensure the smartest and most talented people are working for the citizens of the state to obtain common sense solutions that ensure successful outcomes.

Governors must focus on providing opportunities and improving outcomes for the citizens of their state, rather than on the cronyism which exists today, including the “good old boy” system we have here in Nevada. I believe governors have an obligation to keep their campaign promises to the people of the state.

If the governor's office in your state does not have the line-item veto power, do you believe it should? Why or why not?

The governor does not have line-item veto power in Nevada, however, I believe this should change. I believe the line-item veto allows the governor to weed out inefficiencies, fraud, waste, political pork and programs and services that don't work for the people of the state. Although I have not made this issue one of my campaign priorities, I do believe it is an important tool for better government and one I intend to champion during my administration.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?

I believe the governor should set the agenda for the legislature to ensure the needs and desires of Nevadans are championed and addressed. In order to set the agenda, the governor is the leader in developing positive working relationships with legislators to produce successful outcomes for programs and services. The governor is responsible for clearly communicating executive branch priorities to the legislature, including what priorities will be approved and what priorities will be vetoed. When necessary, the governor needs to communicate and partner with the citizenry to ensure critical legislation is drafted and passed.

What do you love most about your state?

I have lived all over the world as an Air Force military member and have chosen to make Nevada my final duty station. I love the people of Nevada and their independent, strong character. I love the recreational activities, from skiing to golfing to the fine dining and dives, to the entertainment and quiet walks in nature. But most of all, I ensure the cool summer evenings which allows me to barbeque steaks or hot dogs on my patio grill with my family and friends.
