An effort to recall District 5 Assemblyman Mokie Tew did not move forward in Mat-Su Borough, Alaska, after the borough clerk did not approve the recall petition for circulation in February 2022.[1][2]
Recall supporters
Big Lake residents Terry Gorlick and Irene Crowley initiated the recall process. The recall petition alleged that Tew had engaged in misconduct by introducing a resolution that aimed to change the way that road service contracting worked in Big Lake. The petition alleged that this change would have "directly [benefitted] Tew and his family members despite the additional costs to Borough taxpayers."[1][2]
The petition also said, "Tew committed removable misconduct by providing confidential information to friends regarding calcium chloride contracts (for road work) between March-August 202 [sic]."[2]

Borough clerk Lonnie McKechnie rejected the petition, based on a legal opinion that held that the petition did not offer legally sufficient grounds for recall.[2]
For a special recall election to be scheduled, organizers would have needed to collect signatures from 25% of registered voters in Mat-Su Borough Assembly District 5. Organizers would have had 60 days to collect signatures.[1]
