An effort to recall four of the seven members of the Molalla River School District Board of Directors in Oregon did not go to a vote in 2020. Linda Eskridge, Mark Lucht, Neal Lucht, and Craig Loughridge were named in the recall petitions. Recall supporters did not file petitions by the deadline on April 22, 2020. A total of 1,400 signatures were required per board member.[1][2]

Recall supporters

The recall effort was started by Molalla resident Michael Giard. "We live in a community that wants to enable and support our children," Giard said. "But we also live in a community that, in spite of its generosity, distrusts our school district. Our children are suffering with our current district leadership and that is what needs to change."[3]

The recall petitions against all four members included the same reasons for recall: "Perceived lack of fiscal responsibility and failure to hold school administration accountable."[1][4]

Recall opponents

In response to the recall effort, Loughridge said the four members were chosen "based on their tendency to vote their conscience rather than vote in lockstep with the other three board members to accomplish an agenda," according to the Molalla Pioneer.[3]

"I don't think they're interested in recalling all four of those board members," Loughridge said. "They're recalling four board members because the more members they potentially recall and put up for a vote, increases their odds of getting at least one member recalled. And I think they're just simply trying to change the balance of power on the board."[3]
