Monique currently serves as the State Representative for Ohio House District 16. She was elected in 2020 and was the only Democrat in the state of Ohio to flip a state legislative seat from red to blue in 2020. Monique Smith was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lives in North Olmsted, Ohio. Smith earned a bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University.

Monique’s concern for her community comes from having experienced tough challenges growing up. As a daughter of a single mother, her family struggled to overcome issues like threats to safety and stability caused by domestic violence, doing full-time work without a living wage or health insurance and difficulty finding affordable, high-quality childcare and housing in areas with good schools.

Thanks to perseverance and access to resources and opportunities, Monique is in a position to give back to her community today.
  • Ohioans should be given full access to quality health care, including reproductive care and mental health care
  • Ohioans should feel safe in schools and in their community. As a gun sense advocate, I work on legislation that will create safer communities and works to eliminate gun violence.
  • Ohio should be a leading state in technology and innovation. I work to expand job training that promotes the future of work.
When I ran against a Republican incumbent in 2020, it was because I believed he was unwilling to represent the values of the families and women living in Ohio's 16th House District. I was compelled to run for this elected position to have a positive impact on policies that improve the lives of Ohio's women and families.

I'm a passionate advocate for gun sense - the simple idea that more should be done to keep our families and communities safe from gun violence. As a result I’ve introduced a bill seeking to create Extreme Risk Protection Orders or “Red Flag” laws to reduce gun violence.

I’m also personally passion ate about mental health. As a result, I’ve introduced a bill to require publicly-funded health care organizations to admit or stabilize individuals who are voluntarily admitting themselves for mental health or addiction crises

Most importantly, I’m a strong advocate for equal rights – including full defending reproductive rights. As a result, I’ve drafted a resolution urging the national archivist for congress to acknowledge the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

I am a former city councilwoman and an 18-year resident of the western suburbs of Cleveland, where my husband and I are raising our two children. I am running to represent Rocky River, Bay Village, Westlake, North Olmsted and Fairview Park at the statehouse in Columbus. I was born in Ohio and graduated from The Ohio State University after serving in Americorps. I have volunteered and served in many capacities, including as an elected city councilwoman at large representing over 52,000 constituents from 2010 to 2014 and as a member of a number of boards, commissions, and community groups (listed at www.moniquesmith.com). My professional experience includes marketing and sales at leading companies in Ohio and in my district. These experiences give me the ability to combine the best of private and public sector ideas to create commonsense solutions that actually work for my community, which I did as councilwoman and will continue to do as State Representative.
  • Providing full access to affordable health care and stopping the spread of COVID should be our top priorities in Ohio.
  • We must support Ohio workers and local businesses with resources to make workplaces safe and economically sustainable during the pandemic.
  • Ohio's broken school funding formula must be fixed in order to improve outcomes and ensure that Ohio is competitive.
A serious and scientifically-backed plan for stopping the spread of COVID should be our top priority in Ohio. We must ensure access to testing, vaccinations, treatment and personal protective equipment in order to save lives and move our state toward economic recovery. My opponent and his party have failed to do this for our state so we must replace them with new leaders.

We must protect workers and small businesses by providing resources to make workplaces safer during the pandemic and offering grants and loans to keep our local businesses operating safely. My opponent has failed to take such steps to protect his constituents and the small businesses in his district. He must be voted out because of his lack of leadership which is threatening the safety and success of our community.

Ohio's broken school funding formula must be fixed in order to raise our state's national ranking in educational performance and to provide equitable access to the skills and training that Ohio students need to succeed in the economy of the future. My opponent has failed to address the demand from the Supreme Court of Ohio that legislators address our state's unconstitutional funding system. I will make this issue a top priority.
Integrity, empathy, a willingness to learn and a willingness to listen.
The core responsibilities for a State Representative is to represent the values and needs of the residents of Ohio House District 16. I believe this position demands that a state representative to be a civic leader in all areas, to connect with community stakeholders and to lead with their interests in mind, not the interests of special-interest groups or corporations.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Ohio

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
