In Montana, there is one primary agency involved in statewide campaign finance regulation: the Montana Commissioner of Political Practices.

Authority

The office of the Commissioner of Political Practices was established in 1975. The commissioner is responsible for investigating election and campaign finance law violations, and enforcing the laws in conjunction with county attorneys. Candidates and committees are required to file campaign finance reports with the commissioner as well as county officials.[1][2]

Organization

The commissioner is appointed by the governor, and confirmed by a majority of the state senate for a six-year term. A commissioner cannot serve more than once.[1]
