State executive official elections in 2012 |
The Montana secretary of state election took place on November 6, 2012. The primary election took place on June 5, 2012.
The election featured a rematch between incumbent Linda McCulloch (D) and former secretary of state Brad Johnson (R), whom McCulloch had defeated in the 2008 election.
After the 2008 election, Johnson made an unsuccessful bid for the Public Service Commission in 2010, worked as a consultant, and was involved in an alternative-energy development venture.[1] Upon announcing his candidacy in October, Johnson stated that his campaign would not focus heavily on criticizing McCulloch’s administration, but rather “it’s going to be about the successes we had in the first term and continuing to realize the vision I had for the future of the office.”[1]
Johnson won the Republican primary against Helena-based engineer Scott Aspenlieder, real estate investor and science fiction author Drew Turiano, and Missoula accountant Patty Lovaas, securing a rematch with McCulloch in the general election.[2]
One Libertarian candidate, criminologist and civil liberties advocate Roger Roots, filed to run before the March 12 deadline.[3]
