Montana Senate Bill 289 was introduced by Sen. Duane Ankney (R-20) on November 4, 2014. It was carried over to the 2015 legislative session and approved in the Montana State Senator on February 26, 2015. In the Montana House of Representatives, the bill was approved on March 28, 2015. Gov. Steve Bullock (D) signed it into law on April 22, 2015.[1]

SB 289 revised campaign finance laws to implement more rules and clarify definitions concerning the disclosure of funding sources. The bill also required disclosure of the funding sources of political ads and imposed other campaign finance disclosure requirements.[1]

Supporters and sponsors

Governor Bullock backed this bill. Supporters argued it would provide more transparency to the source of campaign funding for both candidates and ballot issues in Montana.[2]

Opposition

Critics of SB 289 said that the bill was too vague and that it was not specific enough in its definitions.[2]
