Two of the seven seats on the Montgomery Public Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on March 1, 2016.
District 4 incumbent Mary Briers (D) filed for re-election, while District 7 incumbent Beverly Ross opted against seeking another term. Briers defeated Michael Cheatham (D) in the primary election on March 1, 2016. Incumbent Roberta Collins (D), Phyllis Harvey-Hall (D), and Arica Watkins-Smith (D) ran in the primary to replace Ross. Collins and Watkins-Smith advanced from the primary to a runoff election on April 12, 2016, because no candidate received a majority of the District 7 primary vote. Watkins-Smith defeated Collins in the runoff election and won without opposition in the general election. Briers defeated Loretta Grant (R) in the general election.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Montgomery Board of Education consists of seven members elected by district to six-year terms. Two seats were up for election in 2014. Board members are prohibited from working for the district during their service on the board. Candidates for the board must also reside in their electoral districts at least one year prior to the candidate filing deadline.[2]
Prospective board candidates were required to file with county party officials by November 6, 2015. Candidates must be 18 years old and reside in their counties for at least one year prior to the election.[3]

Montgomery Public Schools is located in Montgomery County, Alabama. The seat of county government is Mobile. Montgomery County was home to 226,189 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the third-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 31,802 students.[7]
Demographics
Montgomery County outperformed the state of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 31.5 percent of Montgomery County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 22.6 percent for Alabama as a whole. The median household income in Montgomery County was $44,790, compared to $43,253 for the state of Alabama. The poverty rate in Montgomery County was 21.2 percent, compared to 18.6 percent for the entire state.[6]
