My Name is Monty Normand, and I am a candidate for Alexandria District 206 School Board. I am motivated to run by my daughter who is a student at Discovery Middle School. I am currently an active member of both the Discovery Middle School Parent Principal Connect and District 206 Superintendent Advisory Councils. I graduated in 1988 from Jefferson Sr High School and have been a long-time resident of Alexandria. As a member of the Alexandria School Board, I will work to restore the academic excellence that our schools were accustomed to. Building on the great work already being done in the district. I will be a common sense voice for parents, teachers, and students alike. Safety, transparency, and accountability must remain key factors for our schools.
  • Transparency

Conducting the business of our school district with transparency establishes trust. Transparency means more than not actively hiding information. Being transparent includes ease of access to information and

in some instances, communicate information even if it is not required by statute. While researching our district, I found many occurrences of missing or incomplete information stated on the districts website. These omissions could be accidental, or maybe state laws no longer require they be provided. The missing data makes it difficult to understand budget trends and other important historic dates.
  • Academic Performance The performance backslide of our school district is shocking and concerning. This decline in performance opens the flood gate for questions. Simple questions such as: Why has this been allowed to happen? Did the 2013 implementation of either the Academy model or the A/B class schedule at the high school have a role in this decline? Does SEL have an influence in this decline? No matter what the answers are, I will push to develop an improvement plan and implementation.
  • Social, Emotional, Learning (SEL) Social emotional learning is a controversial topic that seems to be in the headlines all the time. When I’ve asked several of my daughter’s teachers about this topic, they all have politely addressed the question in non-descript ways. Her report cards have categories for: Be Ready; Be Respectful; and Be Responsible. Although these categories have a note stating, “not for grading” each one comes with a grade next to it. I can only assume this is part of the SEL program/process. I am concerned SEL is a contributing factor to our district's 56 place drop in the state rankings over the past 19 years.
Transparancy and Book banning. Book banning means different things to different people. Personally, I feel the banning of a book is destroying it or removing access to it by legal actions. I am 100% pro free speech and against book banning. What I do support is book selection. This mean that every book made available within our public school system shall support or add value to the curriculum. Schools have no business providing literature that contains explicit sexual activities, including rape, prostitution, and explicit violence. It shall be a personal family decision if you want your children to have those of materials. Seek them for yourself, it is not the responsibility of our public school system to provide them.
30 years’ experience in the manufacturing sector as a Quality Manager, I’ve been able to develop a Open-Minded, Evidence Based approach that helps me make objective decisions.
