Campaign themes

2017

King's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

FAMILY FIRST
Strong families lead to strong community district, and better relationships with our neighbors. Together, we can unite to solve the problems/issues that we face in our community. Being a longtime resident of the (41st) community, I am keenly aware of the problems/issues and is working tirelessly with residents, community board and elected officials to address problems such as: Education, HealthCare, Senior Care, Youth employment, Housing, Crime and Criminal Justice System, Immigration, Jobs, Small Businesses, LGBT and Women Issues.

EDUCATION
As a lifelong educator, I believe all children should be able to lead a happy and successful life. Every child should have the opportunity to reach their horizon and attain the American dream. Education is the foundation for every child no matter their zip code.

HEALTH CARE
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as Obama Care is at grave risk. The new president wants to repeal this major law. In New York, over 3.5 million people have enrolled. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers were insured for the first time. Many have had their first mammogram; countless lives have been saved and hundreds of thousands have gain Medicaid coverage. These are some of the huge gains working families realized under Obama Care. I will fight so that every New Yorker will have excellent health care.

SENIOR CARE/RETIREMENT SECURITY
Seniors should never need to choose between buying food, paying for rent or buying medication that they need to stay healthy. I will work to ensure that seniors have a secure and healthy retirement. I will fight for that.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
I will be obligated to working with all young people to help create new opportunities through on the job training program, vocational training, financial literacy training and harness their entrepreneur spirit for high tech or cutting-edge developments in business and politics.

HOUSING & HOME OWNERSHIP
Affordable housing is not always affordable. Certain minority or immigrant communities cannot afford housing, a very basic need. I will ensure our people have Access to subsidized housing. The American dream for many New Yorker to own their own home has also become an exclusive nightmare. High down

JOBS
Community of colors and Immigrant community continues to be plagued with high unemployment and under employment in a disappropriate way. I will work to bring businesses that will spur job creation. I will work to lower taxes on working families and make $15.00 an hour the law of New York City. I will encourage constituents to start small business and I will help to bring resources to ensure small businesses thrive. For too long our community have been left behind.

SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY
I will work to make it easier for New Yorkers to start and grow small businesses. From family-owned restaurants, bakeries, hair salons to high-tech start-ups; I will be your voice in City Hall. Our businesses in New York are essential and crucial elements in our communities. Overall, New York’s small businesses generated $954 billion in receipts in 2012. They accounted for approximately 43 percent of all business receipts in the State, nearly 3.9 million jobs and almost $190 billion in payroll. I will be your voice in city hall to implement legislation and work with city agencies to help strengthen small and minority owned businesses.

REFORMING NY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM
We need broad based police reform. I would encourage and help create true community policing by building trust between police, the criminal justice system and our community. True Criminal Justice reform calls for speedy trials and bail reforms. I believe young offenders with minor offences should not be co-mingled with the rest of the inmates population. I believe firmly in citizens’ 'right to know.' When police officers approach citizens, they should explain themselves to that person. I believe in 'right to counsel' as being introduced now in housing courts.

DRUG/ALCOHOL ADDICTION AND GUN VIOLENCE
Too often minority communities have been hardest hit by gun violence that hurts every concerned New Yorker. I will work for stricter gun laws and tougher penalties for law breakers. Drug and Alcohol addiction have plaque our communities. I will work for more treatment centers, coupled with education to assist our communities.

IMMIGRANTS CONCERNS
As an immigrant, I will support New York City as a sanctuary to protect immigrants from the Right Wing Republican Agenda. I will work tirelessly to defend all immigrant communities and neighbors. Keeping families together help to strengthen our economy. I will work to treat all immigrants with dignity and respect.

WOMEN ISSUES
As a woman, I will work to end gender discrimination that exists in our community; biases that inhibits the full potential and limit women’s opportunities.

LGBT COMMUNITY
As Council member of the 41st District, I am committed to working to end LGBT Violence and discrimination.[3]
