|Mohammed was appointed by Governor RoyCooper to the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities and North Carolina’s Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice.
Mohammed’s proven record of service to children and families led to his election to the North Carolina State Senate in 2018, where he is working to ensure every family and child has a chance at a brighter economic future.- Education is a basic function of our state government and we must always work to ensure every child receives a quality public education.
- We need to restore our economy from the ground up and increase economic mobility amongst all of our families.
- Hold government accountable, restore transparency, and repeal laws that reduce equity in our communities.

Mujtaba A. Mohammed participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Mujtaba A. Mohammed's responses follow below.[3]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) Education |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | I am passionate about Public Education because I am the product of a strong public education system. I also believe in a strong economy with the middle class as its backbone. That means restoring tax cuts for middle class families, restoring tax-free weekend, supporting our families and the working poor and making sure the wealthiest in North Carolina pay their fair share. Equity is also important to me. As a public interest attorney, I see the consequences of a tough on crime approach everyday and I see those consequences when it's too late. Everyday children are being pushed out of our classrooms and into jail cells, that must end. I also believe in an independent judiciary and the independent redistricting committee. We need to protect our judges and allow voters to decide who represents us.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]
|
” |
Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Mujtaba A. Mohammed answered the following:
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
“ | I believe integrity and dependability are some of the most important characteristics you need to have to be the best public servant.[5] | ” |
“ | I am very good negotiator and politics is all about compromise, but I do not believe we should compromise our values or our values to achieve an end goal.[5] | ” |
“ | I want to vlear the path for the next leader, help build our states bench of future public servants.[5] | ” |
“ | I have a chair that I've had for years. It has taken me through college, law school, my first apartment, my first home and the first time I rocked my son to sleep. I love that chair.[5] | ” |
“ | Members of the Senate hold appointment powers for a significant amount of positions.[5] | ” |
“ | I believe it is important to remember why you ran for office in the first place to remember how you got there. For me, I will recall the faces, voices and stories of all of my clients. Those too poor to pay their court fees, break the cycle of ooverty and those just lookijg for a second chance.[5] | ” |
“ | I support and once elected will sponsor legislation to create and independent redistricting committee.[5] | ” |
“ | Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety, Rules and Operations of the Senate and the Judiciary Committee.[5] | ” |

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
