Cook County, Illinois, held general elections for State's Attorney, board of review commissioners, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, clerk of circuit court, circuit court judges, and subcircuit court judges and a special election for county clerk, a county commissioner, and a county commissioner on November 5, 2024. A primary was scheduled for March 19, 2024. The filing deadline for the primary was December 4, 2023, and the filing deadline for the general election was June 24, 2024.
Ballotpedia identified the March 19 Democratic primary for state's attorney as a battleground race. Eileen O'Neill Burke (D) defeated Clayton Harris III (D) 50.1%–49.9%. O'Neill Burke was a former prosecutor, defense attorney, and judge who said she was running because of crime rates. O'Neill Burke said she would end incumbent Kim Foxx's (D) policy of prohibiting prosecution of retail theft under $1,000.[1] Harris was a former prosecutor and state government staff manager who ran on his experience in government. Harris said he would add a division to the special prosecutors unit that would focus on firearms, carjackings, and retail theft.[1][2] Click here for more information on the Democratic primary for state's attorney.
