Fulton County, Georgia, held general elections for county commissioners, clerk of superior court, solicitor general, district attorney, sheriff, and tax commissioner on November 3, 2020. A primary was scheduled for June 9, 2020. A primary runoff was scheduled for August 11, 2020. A general runoff election was scheduled for December 1, 2020. The filing deadline for candidates in this election was March 6, 2020.
The county also held a general election for Fulton County soil and water conservation district supervisors on November 3, 2020. The filing deadline for that election was August 14, 2020.[1]
Fulton County also held nonpartisan general elections for multiple judgeships on June 9, 2020. A general runoff election was scheduled for August 11, 2020. The filing deadline was March 6, 2020.[1]
Georgia's primary election was postponed from May 19 to June 9, 2020, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Election procedure changes in 2020
Ballotpedia provided comprehensive coverage of how election dates and procedures changed in 2020. While the majority of changes occurred as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, some changes occurred for other reasons.
Georgia modified its absentee/mail-in voting and candidate filing procedures for the November 3, 2020, general election as follows:
- Candidate filing procedures: The petitioning deadline for minor-party and unaffiliated candidates was extended to August 14, 2020. The petition signature requirement for independent and minor-party candidates was reduced to 70 percent of their original numbers.

District attorney
Fani Willis defeated incumbent Paul Howard Jr. with 72% of the vote to his 28%. Howard had held the office since 1997. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote, "Leading up to Democratic primary on June 9, the race had largely been a referendum on Howard’s 24 years in office, particularly the last year."[2] In another article the Journal-Constitution also wrote, "As the runoff nears, both candidates have been fiercely attacking one another, both during online debates and in ads. Howard has criticized Willis for accepting donations from police unions. Willis has condemned the DA for the sexual harassment complaints filed against him. (Howard strongly denies the allegations.)"[3]

Five of 159 Georgia counties—3.14 percent—are pivot counties. These are counties that voted for Barack Obama (D) in 2008 and 2012 and for Donald Trump (R) in 2016. Altogether, the nation had 206 pivot counties, with most being concentrated in upper midwestern and northeastern states.

In the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump (R) won Georgia with 50.8 percent of the vote. Hillary Clinton (D) received 45.6 percent. In presidential elections between 1900 and 2016, Georgia voted Democratic 63.33 percent of the time and Republican 36.67 percent of the time. Georgia voted Republican in every presidential election from 2000 to 2016.
