Four seats on the Garland City Council were up for election in 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was February 19, 2016. Since only one person filed to run for each of the seats, the election was cancelled. Had there been any contested races, it would have occurred on May 7, 2016. The incumbents for Districts 2 and 4, Anita Goebel and B.J. Williams, filed for re-election. However, the incumbents for Districts 1 and 5 did not seek another term, so David Gibbons and Richard Aubin became the two new members of the council. They were sworn-in on May 17, 2016.[1]
