Party: Republican Party

Incumbent: Yes

Political Office:

Biography:  Lopez obtained a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College and a law degree from Suffolk University. Before her appointment as state attorney, Lopez served as a prosecutor and as a judge on the Hillsborough County Court.

Key Messages

The following key messages were curated by Ballotpedia staff. For more on how we identify key messages, click here.

Lopez said she had turned the state attorney's office around since Warren's removal: "The community needs to know that their State Attorney is solely focused on finding justice and making certain those guilty of committing crimes serve their time. I want crime victims to know they are supported and families to know Hillsborough County is safe for their children."

Lopez said that she had taken a harsher approach on crime and that her approach delivered results: "Lopez isn't just our state attorney, she's our prosecutor. Driving crime to historic lows, protecting victims not criminals, and taking the fight to drug dealers who target kids."

Lopez said her policy priorities included maintaining a strong relationship with law enforcement, reducing the rate of gun violence, and focusing on advocacy for victims of crime.

Party: Democratic Party

Incumbent: No

Political Office:

Biography:  Warren obtained a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Brandeis University and a law degree from Columbia University. Before running for elected office, Warren worked as a prosecutor in state and federal government.

Key Messages

The following key messages were curated by Ballotpedia staff. For more on how we identify key messages, click here.

Warren said he was the duly-elected state attorney after winning the 2020 election and that in removing him from office, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) "threw out your vote. He illegally forced me from office under armed guard...The judge ruled that I did my job and the suspension was unconstitutional."

Warren contrasted his record with that of incumbent Suzy Lopez (R). Warren said that in office he "embraced data-driven approaches that improve safety, cut crime, and save taxpayer dollars." Warren said Lopez "was handpicked based on one qualification - her blind allegiance to Ron DeSantis."

Warren said he was running "to protect our values - for a woman's right to choose, for a fair and just system, and above all, for freedom and democracy. I'm running to do what's right."
