At the age of three, Munira’s parents fled war-torn Somalia in the pursuit of a new beginning. She grew up in the heart of Columbus near the 1-61 area and found comfort in the beauty of a diverse immigrant community. She went to Columbus City School District and graduated from Columbus Alternative High School. It was in high school that she developed a passion for community service, confronted with the brutal reality of homelessness, aging school facilities, and inadequate mental health services.

It became apparent to her that community service can only go so far, that real and effective change can only come from quality legislation. Driven by this newfound passion, she continued her education at The Ohio State University and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. She completed multiple internships, became the IGNITE fellow of the Columbus chapter, received an award from the city and state in promoting mental health initiatives, and currently serves as the Programs Director for MAS-Columbus.

She’s running for OH-D9 because she knows what it’s like to fall within the cracks and is ready to get to work to revitalize, re-energize and restore hope in her community.
I am committed to fighting for quality public healthcare, affordable medication, housing, better transportation and infrastructure.

From personal experience, I know the constraints of the healthcare system. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, I found myself having to work full-time while completing my college education just to pay for insulin and quality care. I remember still falling short, racking up large sums of debt due to hospital emergency visits, and struggling to pay off my medical debt. No one should ever go into crippling debt just to stay alive. If elected, I will work twice as hard to make sure that Ohioans have access to high-quality medication and care, regardless of income or pre-existing conditions.

Affordable housing crisis has caused mass displacement, gentrification, and homelessness in our community. Ohioans continue to suffer due to rising rental and housing costs, specifically low-income residents and senior citizens. Communities of color are also disproportionately affected by the failures in our housing market. If elected, I will work to ensure Ohioans are afforded protection against price hikes, push for more diverse developers and expand housing services for our homeless community.

Columbus is one of the fastest growing cities in America but still does not have reliable public transportation. With fuel prices on the climb, public transit is becoming the only affordable option for many Ohioans. We need to make sure we invest more

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Ohio

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
