Federal charges and resignation (2020)
On November 5, 2020, Vega pleaded not guilty to federal corruption charges, to include bribery and wire fraud.[1] Vega was accused "of more than doubling the salary of one unidentified employee and then demanding half of it in return...[He] received the money via direct deposit into his bank and a Home Depot account."[1] He resigned on November 10 of the same year.[2]
As reported by Primera Hora, Vega offered the following response in his resignation letter:
"Given the facts that have been publicly discussed, in which there is a federal investigation against me, I have made this difficult decision, for the welfare of the legislative body to which I have been honored to belong...I am calm and at peace. I came to work for my people, and that is what I have been doing since 2017. But I understand the responsibility of the historical moment in which we find ourselves and, therefore, I have made the decision that I have just communicated to you."[2]
