NY Judges to receive first raise in 13 years

Albany, New York: Despite budgetary problems, the New York legislature's upcoming budget includes pay raises for 1300 state judge, the first of their kind in 13 years. The raises come on the heals of numerous critiques from Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman concerning the lack of judicial raises and the loss of key judges due to better economic opportunities elsewhere. In response, the legislature created the seven-member Special Commission on Judicial Compensation to discuss proposed changes to judicial pay. The proposed 2.3 billion judicial budget has $27.7 million in raises, with salaries increasing from $136,700 to $160,000 a year. Legislator's have not had an across the board pay raise for 10 years.[1]
