Albany, NY As the dust begins to settle on the NY state budget negotiations, it is becoming apparent that the state judiciary will have to take a large hit in order to fall within their allotted funds. The budget announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday March 27 restored $480 million to education and human services while slashing the courts budget by $170 million. Chief justice Jonathan Lippman said that the large budget cuts would result in layoffs at all levels within the courts. Lippman told the New York Times, "“It will have a tremendous impact on the system. At a minimum, you’re going to see delays in the administration of justice, without question.” Lippman's last budget proposal for the court's included a $100 million cut, or roughly 4% of the courts operating cost from last year. The $170 cut constitutes a 6% cut to the court's budget, still less than the 10% Governor Cuomo asked of all state departments at the start of budget negotiations, including his own office.[1]
