Campaign themes

2015

Redmon discussed the district's projected budget shortfalls in an interview with the Paterson Press:

Clearly, the current system of school funding isn’t working. For our schools to succeed in the long run, local school boards, policymakers, and the public need to reexamine how public education is funded at the local, state, and federal levels. The federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and education job funds are simply tourniquets for hemorrhaging local and state education budgets. We need a new system that will stop the bleeding permanently by providing reliable and sustainable funding for public education. What that new funding system looks like should be the subject of a serious conversation and the subject of in-depth research.

The board of education must effectively communicate how severe the long-term outlook is to the local community. If the NJDOE keeps underfunding the Paterson school district, our students who are just starting school now will not be able to compete with their international peers when they graduate from high school. Asking the Paterson school district to do more with less does not make sense. How much less can our schools have before they are unable to do more? [3]
