Nancy E. Parrish was a judge for the Third Judicial District in Shawnee County, Kansas.[1] She served as chief judge on the court from 2005 until 2013.[2] Parrish was appointed to the bench by Governor Joan Finney in 1994.[3] She faced a retention election on November 8, 2016.[4]
Education
Parrish earned an undergraduate degree from Kansas State University, and a J.D. from Washburn University, School of Law in 1984.[3] She also earned a graduate degree in special education from the University of Kansas.[1]

Kansas held retention and partisan elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on August 2, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was June 1, 2016.[5] Nancy E. Parrish was retained in the Kansas District 3 (Division 14) election with 72.02 percent of the vote. [6]

Parrish stood for retention on November 6, 2012.[7] She was successful in her bid for retention, earning 76.1 percent of the vote, with 48,874 "yes" votes.[8]
Judicial selection method
In 17 of the districts of the Kansas District Courts, judges are chosen through the commission-selection, political appointment method. These judges stand for retention after their first year in office and serve four-year terms if retained.[9][10]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[9]
- a state and district resident;
- a member in good standing of the state bar for at least five years; and
- under the age of 70. If a sitting judge turns 70 while on the bench, he or she may serve out the term.
